“An Educated Consumer is our Best Customer”
The above slogan was created by Sy Syms in the 1960’s and that slogan still stands today. So many people call me and ask how much it would cost to cater their wedding or event and for 30 years I have the same thought each and every time I hear that question. My immediate thought is that you have not really done your homework yet and it’s clear that you might not know all the specifications needed to hire a caterer.
Here are some tips on how to start determining what you’ll need from a caterer,
- Determine your budget
- You and your partner each pick two wedding items that are important to you
- Determine the approximate number of people that will be in attendance
- Pick a month and also a few possible dates
- Pick a time, whether it’s day or night
Once you’ve narrowed everything down and figured out the things that need figuring out, that’s the moment you want to call the caterer and say, “I would like to discuss the possibility of you catering my wedding. I have a budget of $80 per person and my husband must have fried calamari as well as craft beer. I want a beautiful all-white wedding cake and beautiful flowers. Can you make that happen?”
The lower the price, the more flexible you’ll need to be. Many caterers will discount a Friday night or a Saturday Day wedding. Instead of an open bar or a six-hour blowout wedding, you can have wine, beer, and sangria, as well as a brunch option. All of these alternatives can lessen your cost. Start your search, get educated, and make both Sy Syms, and Myself proud.
